SAFE SUMMER SHOE GEAR

The arrival of warmer weather brings changes to many components of our attire. Dr. McLean, of Superior Foot and Ankle Centers, stresses the importance of protecting your feet during the hot summer months. If you have to wear flip-flops, make sure you apply waterproof sunscreen to your feet. Despite the manufacturer's claims, sunscreen wears off, so if you get your feet wet at the beach or pool (even if nothing else gets submerged), it should be reapplied regularly.

Flip-flops are never to be used for walking long distances, Dr. McLean states. Even the sturdiest of them offer little in terms of shock absorption as well as the stability your arch needs. If you must wear something open toed in the summer, wear a sturdy closed-back sandal with arch support. This type of sandal is going to be better for you. And some of the newer designs, sometimes referred to as a sports sandal, are even better (although neither will equal the benefits of a well designed sports shoe)
